Three charity experts from PEM will discuss various aspects of charity tax and accounting, including gift aid, VAT, restricted funds, grant applications, and the impact of COVID on charities.
Gift aid is a valuable source of income for charities but it is estimated that £560m of eligible gift aid is unclaimed each year, and that £180m is claimed when it shouldn’t be. Judith Pederzolli will cover how charities should consider whether they are maximising their claims, also whether all of the necessary conditions are being met to support their existing claims.
Leila Ong will cover VAT reliefs and exemptions available to charities, and how to minimise VAT leakage. She will look at the temporary ‘Partial Exemption Special Method’ application process introduced due to the COVID crisis.
Jayne Rowe will then give an overview of the overall impact of COVID on the charity sector.

Judith Pederzolli, Director of Direct Tax at PEM, joined the firm in 2001. Judith specialises in the property and not-for-profit sectors, advising charity clients on gift aid, trading, and property transactions.
Leila Ong, Assistant Director of VAT at PEM, graduated in law, and spent six years working in the charitable sector before entering the tax profession. Leila trained in employment taxes but has focused on VAT for the last 10 years; she is experienced in advising charities on all aspects of VAT. She is passionate about explaining the complexities of VAT in a clear and engaging way. Leila is a member of the VAT Practitioners Group, and the Chartered Institute of Taxation and, is also a trustee of a charity.
Jayne Rowe, Partner (Accounting) at PEM, and Head of Charities & Not-for-Profit, joined the firm in 2018 from Deloitte National Charities & Not-for-Profit team, where she gained over 20 years’ experience in the sector. Jayne sits on the ICAEW Charity Committee and, is also a Trustee of an international charity.
