Identifying our blind spots, or areas where we need to improve, is sometimes difficult. In my case, there are many areas I would like to improve in. I have this burning desire to grow beyond the confines of my current employment level or level of expertise, and in order to do so, I need to beef up my own knowledge and skills arsenal.

Earlier this year, I embarked on a company-sponsored management development program. I wanted to attend this program, as I have seen the growth our general office manager underwent during the program, and felt that this program presented an opportunity to hone some of my management skills and network with other like-minded individuals within the Motus family. The aim of the course is to improve our management skills, polish our soft skills, and re-inforce (or dispel) what we know (or think we know) about management. Our MDP comprises twelve two-day monthly contact sessions, and assignments and individual coaching, and will come to an end in December 2019. The course will thus occupy the bulk of my training and development activities for 2019.

Big data analytics, AI, blockchain and crypto-currencies have dominated accounting magazines and technology magazines over the past two years. The more I read about it, the more I realise how little I know about these topics. This year I would like to expand my knowledge on at least one of these topics to the point where I could call myself knowledgeable in that area. The area that would benefit our company the most, lending it priority, would be data analytics. Most of the accounting bodies in South Africa have regular seminars on all these topics. In my case, we are embarking on implementing analytical tools, and I will acquire my knowledge first hand, with on the job training, and augment that by attending some of the CIMA/CGMA seminars on the topic. There is also a wealth of information on the CGMA website, that could help connect the dots.

As we have to embark on a development project as part of our company’s Management Development Program, I have chosen analytics as my project, hoping to add value to the company by identifying new markets or market segments, and trends within our market, and exploiting them for the benefit of our company.
